Just had an interesting thought:
I know Italia did state they're not trying to change the 300fps standard here. But if it were something that could be changed, would you change it?
Because I was thinking about it again today, and realized, that if you WERE able to turn the fps to 485, it would pretty much perform exactly the same way as .68 at 300fps.
Reasoning: Looking at Schmitti's work, it was found that indeed, drag has little to no discernible effect on two different paintballs when the difference is only 18calibers.
So it stands to reason that if you do match up the energy and launch the paintballs accordingly, they would perform pretty much exactly the same.
So heres the question: if we assume that the fps is variable in ASTM standards, would you do it? Note: Looking over schmitti's work again - I noticed your equation for drag is incorrect. It's supposed to be V^2 instead of V?. I'm not sure if you put that in when you used excel and it's hidden in the equations?
A lot of you are misunderstanding me. I'm not advocating the change to 50cal by any means! I just want to make sure the math is right and the physics is sound.
