Never had a problem with overheating it; I actually prefer to throw it snout-down in a pot of boiling water. Then I can wander off and get the vice, heavy gloves, etc ready, come back after a little while (5-10 minutes, but I'm sure less would work, my point is with boiling water you don't have to worry about cooking the metal, you just have to worry about boiling the pot dry), throw it on the vice and twist 'er off.

I use a piece of leather scrap on each side of the body when I put it in the vice; cardboard would work too. And I have a pair of channel-locks with duct tape on the jaws so as not to mangle the ASA.

Once it's hot enough the ASA comes out fairly easily.
