People experimented using freak inserts instead of the cartridge casings and only got positive results.. however i think the area that allowed a freak insert to be used was filled in...

For the velocity part:
"Higher velocities in the 280-300 FPS range have been recorded, using compressed air, although this can cause faster wear of the O-Rings. It is therefore recommended that GOBLIN Air Cartridges be filled with CO2 whenever possible, especially when lower velocities are desirable or necessary."
and for threading:
"-Solid Barrel 'ends' can be tapped for Barrel Extensions"
and velocity issues:
"Longer Barrels dramatically increase the performance potential of the Air Cartridges"
