Everything has been pretty much superfluous since automags. But obviously we keep buying the crap... A better phrase would be "These are needed about as much as brass paintball guns."
True indeed. Nothing wrong with options, even if those options offer little in the way of innovation. Same reason there's hundreds of different cars on the road, when we could all be driving identical machines around.
