The other big trigger system is Radio Popper
. I've not used them myself, by I know many that do and swear by them. I'm not sure of the differences between Radio Poppers and Pocket Wizards, but they are both high quality. Just out of curiosity, what will you be doing that will require high speed sync? When I use flash (and in all honesty I don't use it that often), I'm using a few manual flashes with remote triggers. They don't do high speed sync, so using them you are limited to around 1/300th with your exposure, but you adjust for proper exposure with the aperture. They do take some getting used to, and you might have to change settings on them a bit more, but you can find manual flashes for between $60 and $150 each, and the triggers are pretty inexpensive
. So, for the price of one 580 EXII, you can pick up 3 manual flashes and triggers. Just a thought. Good luck.
