Spend good money on a bike, because the quality will show. I bought a $350 Gary Fisher bike from a specialty store. The bike itself is decent and has OK construction, but in all reality it's a piece of ****. I bought it April 2011 and rode trails maybe 3-4 days a week from June-September.
I am hesitant to ride it because the remaining stock parts on it are trashed. I gave it maintenance and took care of it, but the general quality of the bike is lacking. And the absolute worst thing would be the bike ****ting itself while you're in the middle of something intense. I've only spent one day riding this summer, as opposed to almost every day last. I need a job and a new bike.
Road bike or mountain bike, I'd stay away from WalMart.
