Yeah, but you used some means of controlling and focusing the light onto a photosensitive surface to produce an image. aka, a camera.
How much work did you get to do with the really early photography methods? Personally I really want to get into the very early style wet plates. Having to prepare your plate, take the photograph, and then develop it, all within a few minutes from start to finish sounds like a lot of fun and challenge.
