One issue that you are going to get with a 2.1 combination is that the woofers in the speakers themselves won't be powerful enough to deliver the mid-range. You will get the subwoofer trying to push out the middle frequencies, which doesn't provide very good or accurate sound.
But as you said, sound quality to you is second. I just got a used Logitech Z-2300 from a friend of mine as a freebie: Amazon.com: Logitech Z-2300 THX-Certified 2.1 Speaker System with Subwoofer: Electronics
It seems to be looked at in high regard compared to other 2.1 systems, but you are stuck buying NOS on eBay or Amazon.
