If you mean there's a 1"-2" gap between the body and the backblock, then no, that's not normal. You'll need to adjust the length of your pump arm to where there's only a slight, paperthin gap between them. You don't want it making contact every cycle, but you don't want a big gap, either.
note that its a pump not a semi.

So there a bit of play when i pump it back before it catches the cocking rod.

Pump moved all the way forward.

pemped move back till i meet resistance.
