My grandpa bought a Micro 4/3's camera after upgrading from his OLD Olympus point and shoot. I urged him to make the jump to a DSLR, but he argued that he didn't want to carry it around on his travels. He has had his Sony NEX for around a year now and he loves the thing. We swapped cameras for an afternoon a while back, he had my 7D and I had his Sony. I enjoyed it but I'll probably never buy one for myself. For me, they are lighter but not really more practical. I couldn't put one in my pocket, so I would just carry my 7D. I carry a grip on my 7D and I usually have my 70-200 f2.8 attached so its pretty heavy, but if I was going for lightweight I'd just carry a 50mm and take the grip off.
Either way he loves it. For the ease of use aspect, it works great. He's gotten some great pictures out of it.
