Paintball started as a war game simulation. It has always been a wargame simulation. The resurgence of woodsball is great because of the new product market and competition which benefits the consumer. Speedball got some attention for awhile, but paintball hasn't changed. It's still true to it's roots, and I have been playing woods and scenario ball for 10 years and I have never had to look for outlaw ballers to play with, there are always plenty. Nothing wrong with airball but the BPS race that benefits the paint companies isn't doing the consumer any favors.
