What barrel are you using? My Etek got MUCH quieter and more efficient when I switched to the SL Shaft kit and used a smaller bore size. The 8 comes with the shaft but the stock bore size is huge and it makes it pretty loud. Try a little more reasonable overbore and you might be happier.
Just shooting air through my 7 it's much quieter than the Etek and not much louder than my PM6 when I shot that with air only. With paint it's not bad at all.
