While I'd never pay more than $15 or $20 for paintball gloves the padding on the delicate parts of your hand does make a huge difference. I've played in Mechanix gloves and in paintball gloves and definitely felt the difference when shot in the hand or finger. Even the cheap walmart gloves with the plastic armor on them are much better than nothing at all or gloves with no padding or protection built in.
It's possible to break a finger or one of the delicate bones in your hand with a paintball so a little extra protection is cheap insurance.
