| I'd start a little lower for a first pump. Maintenance is the same as any nelson, I dont know if there even is a "manual". By the time most nelson users get a carter they tend to know what they are doing.
I would look at a phantom or a used sheridan for your first pump, IMO. Phantom if you like light markers, sheridan if you like heavier ones, as they are made from brass. Or a Sniper, an autococker converted back to pump. You can also look at Palmer's markers and other nelsons, Lapco's grey ghost re-release is quite nice, and much like the phantom. There's plenty of older pumps for sale here on the forums too.
Maintenance on a carter is mostly oiling it through the ASA, it will be easily disassembled, but be aware it's fairly heavy.
Have you used any pumps before? Which did you use and what did you like/dislike about them?
Perhaps your income is more disposable than mine, but I tend to ask myself a lot of questions before buying a $600+ new price marker
