.22 is the best all around caliber. It packs alot of energy (double the energy of a .177 around the same fps.) And it is easily available. You'll want a domed round as they are somewhat more stable in the air then wadcutters,hollow points, or even pointed pellets at a distance.

You'll have to decide if you want a break barrel,undercocking/side cocking,pcp (you'll need a scuba tank or hand pump for that),multipump or c02/hpa.
Plus you'll want to decide on either a pistol or rifle.

If you use anything with a spring in it(undercocking/break barrel) You'll want a heavy duty scope like a leapers one or else the sights will just move around and wont stay adjusted due to the recoil.
