| From these replies, I'm glad to find that, as I suspected, paintballers were cheating back in the golden era of paintball when pumps ruled the day, everyone was honorable, etc. all the rants I read on MCB periodically.
I discovered another purpose of the beavertail this past weekend. The back block on my Outkast sniper actually has some quite sharp edges. I didn't have a beavertail on (the one I had doesn't fit with my grip frame), and I ended up cutting my hand on the backblock!
