I hear ya!
I honestly do think that Apple did a fantastic job on the iPod, but their software is......well......it just "is".

I was actually given an iPod by a vendor once that I refused to even open because I didn't want to use iTunes. It stayed shrink-wrapped for several months thinking I'd just toss it up on Ebay.

Then I found Anapod for $30 I'm now an iPod fan. (not so much of the "touch" though)
