| one thing you guys need to think about when doing this is to not go overboard with the washers(or whatever you use) and extend it too long. the less amount of threads that make contact, the weaker the hold will be and you risk stripping the threads. and it'll be the threads in the brass that strip, not the steel knob threads. if those threads strip and let go, you could have a potentialy dangerous rocket on your hands so be careful.
