I got mine for Christmas in 06, and had it connected without an adapter later that night. You have never needed anything USB to connect to the Wii for wireless. Like Clearush said, it is used in place of a wireless router on a PC that has a wired internet connection to make a wireless signal for the Wii. No updates were necessary, how could you get a system update without an internet connection (besides packed into a game)?
