| I've heard vinegar and water (yeah essentially a douche) works very well on the smoke smell. this is from smoking friends who want to keep their deposit. paint seems to really soak up that smoke smell.
one thing to note, the apartments that are the least willing to clean/fix apartments prior to you moving in are also the ones most prone to keeping your security deposit by claiming all that stuff you claimed when you moved in were caused by you. I remember one apartment building that charged 3 tenants in a row for a fist sized hole in the wall, never fixed it ever, but charged each lease $150 to "fix" it. so if they refuse to do anything to make the new apartment livable, then don't be surprised when they try to find a way to charge you for all their neglected maintenance over the years.
