The message being that the military is bad, since all they do is kill. He saw what "his weapons can do", even though he admits they save lives of our soldiers. Tony then BECOMES a weapon, making him seem hypocritical.
He didn't know at that point that Obidiah was double-dealing. The movie implied that terrorists stole them originally. I would have liked it better if Tony decided to stop making weapons to prevent Obidiah from double-dealing. Not because he became "enlightened". That would have made more sense.
