I briefly emailed with Jim prior to the game with some questions I had about ramping/full-auto. He definitely comes off as gruff in his emails and I was left with a little vibe of "I've done scenarios forever and since I don't know who you are, why are you asking me questions instead of accepting my word as gospel?" However, I just chalked it up to the interwebz not being a good way to communicate. Gotta say though, your letter came off pretty inflammatory as well, and I can understand some of his defensive reaction.
As far as getting your money back, you should have tried to find the guys during the game, on Saturday (or done what I did, and just said "sunk cost" and bailed). You did the equivalent of eating your entire steak then telling the waiter that it was undercooked and you weren't paying, and shouldn't expect a refund. Chalk it up to a lesson learned.
