I learned initially how to use and maintain/improve a small lathe off an internet guide, before I took any proper schooling for it... paid off too, cause I actually knew a lot of the basics before I went to learn. I still use my bench lathe for all sorts of small stuff, its very accurate now, although not capable of larger jobs (short ways length, puny chuck)
