I am not a fan of barrel tagging or surrender. The game is paintball, not barrel knife. The idea is to be eliminated by being marked with a paintball projectile.
It is a similar situation to a paintball grenade being thrown at you. The factor that decides whether you go out or not is whether you were sprayed by the paint. Many know that paint grenades are best at being unreliable in their pray pattern and even someone very close has a good chance of "surviving". In the real world a grenade up close is as good as horseshoes.
I am of the thought that if you want to be stealthy and creep into a postion where you can take advantage and shoot many players before they know it, good for you. Creeping around and using an improvised elimination method and expecting people not to do what is natural in notifying others that they are "out" seems questionable to me. Once again, it's paintball.
