As for running unregged... I ran mine off of a CCI bucket for a couple of games after testing the set up, and determined that I was able to achieve 35 usable shots.
Never did it develop any automation issues at all during those few games that day.
I expect that with a 3.5 in the vertical is fine. May not fully operate if ambient temps drop below 65* though.
Running straight co2 may eventually damage seals in the Rock, and ram, and possibly damage the switch. There is a nifty expansion chamber that has a female thread where you can screw in a tank at a 35* angle, and that might help.
