Micromag Barrel Threading?

I just got an autococker threaded python insert kit for my Gen2 PTP Micromag. When I screw in the python, it gets about 2 turns, and then it binds. I tried my friends python kit on my micro, and the same thing happened as well. He owns a Gen3 micromag and the python kit threads into his. I've also tried 2 other cocker threaded barrels and those fit in my micro. So what the deal? Why do most A/C threaded barrels work, but the python does not? Does the Gen2 micromag have some weird A/C threading tolerance issue?

I know that because Autococker threads were never really officially specified, there are variances between them. The tolerances between your barrel and your body may have added up to the point of not being compatible.

You sure you have a Gen2 and not a knock-off ASP? (or whatever the name of that company was)

Yeah it's for sure a Gen2. It has the screw in detente, which I believe was missing on the knock-offs?

Could I perhaps get the threads on my body changed slightly, to get it so the python fits?

See the thread Manike started about this very same issue. I have a few barrels that wont fit my MicroMag or even my Mini. And the one ASP knock-off I saw fit nearly every barrel tossed at it save for a very old J&J.

Here's a link: Making a standard thread for all Paintball Guns... "Autococker".

So what I'm taking away from that thread is that there's a bunch of variations and that I'm boned, and can't do anything about it?

I guess I should email PTP about this, but is it possible that they changed their threading between the Gen2 and Gen3?

You have 2 ways to fix it. The first is to find some one with a tap or buy one and chase the threads in the body. If that doesn't work your next option is to fix the barrel. You might be able to chase the threads with a thread die if you can find one. The other way to fix the barrel threads is going to require a lathe and some one who knows how to repick up the threads. Then it can be cut to to fit the body threads. Here is a link to the tap. Its a cheap import but for what you need it will work fine.

I emailed PTP about this, and Forest wrote me back saying:

Hi Ivan,

We were actually the first company to actually sign a contract with Bud Orr allowing us to build modified Autocockers (1992/3). As such, WGP always supplied us with their factory specifications and provided us with technical drawings. This applied directly to the Autococker (more for our F/X Cockers) of course, BUT since we were using ‘Cocker threads on the Micromag we did have some cross over. We built to the AC drawings and had no issues what-so-ever. The thread is (I believe) basically a standard 15/16” – 20, but since it is a single point the specs are called out and built to that. However, many barrels companies simply measured the thread, took it at face value (15/16 – 20) and used the numbers “from the book” (J&J was typically good about getting the correct specs for example, but many others were not). That didn’t work out very well for a bunch of people and we (and WGP) loosened our body threads up a little to accommodate the “non-spec” barrels – seems like it should have been the other way around, but... In the meantime we bought in a 15/16” tap and modified all of our Micromags and F/X Cockers (those were WGP bodies), and re-tapped bodies for anyone that sent them in to us at no charge. That was a LONG time ago, and anyone building barrels now wouldn’t have an issue unless it was an older Autococker, or Micromag, etc.

Anyway… If you can find someone with a 15/16” – 20 tap you could also go that route – it literally just takes out enough material to make the threads a bit shiny – although because it is such a big tap it does feel a bit like wrist wrestling… If you send it back with the Python breech I’ll make sure that it fits. Just let me know when it’s on the way and we’ll be on the lookout for it.

It's normal. I have a Gen2 micromag and the only barrels that thread into it are the stock barrel, and my deadlywind barrel.
