Sights on mags?

I read an old scan on AO, and the 68Automag was listed as being able to mount sights on the sides of it's rails. Would this still work on modern AM/MM rails? Anyone know what size? They look to be around weaverish, but not exactly.

IIRC, the sides of a standard mag rail are built so you can clamp a standard sized scope ring onto them. That's how the european "sidesaddle" barrel swabs mounted.

Older rails have the sight mounts. Some newer rails for the RT and Tac-1 do not have these mounts.

Any of the old Automag/MiniMag rails should have them.

the rings you need for side mounting fit a 3/8" (or commonly called a rimfire size mount) dovetail.

a ring for a Weaver base is too wide to fit on an AM/MM rail and will not work.

Are you sure it's 3/8"? That's what a phantom ghost ring is, right? Do you mean 7/8"?

The grooves on the side of the rail are the same size as a standard site rail. I used to run a red dot and laser on mine back in the day.

Just for the heck of it once I put 3 sights and a flashlight on my 'Mag using both sides of the rail...
