Mag restoration

Everyone knows how incredible the Tonsixers' anodizing is but this blows my mind!
Tanongi did such an amazing job to bring this girl back to life.

Background:
So, I thought I was through with Automags after the sale of my last mag, a very nice Z-framed mag that shot darts. I do have a little bit of seller's remorse with this one. I like it better than my pneumag but my CCM T2 has become my primary shooter.

I still lurk the AO forum and I came across this Dallara mag that someone :censored: in the BST. It's been there for a while and I finally couldn't stand it and bought the poor thing in hopes of restoring it to it's originally glory. I'm sure some of you will recognize it.

Lucky for me I work as the production scheduler in an injection molding facility equipped with a full machine shop and expert toolmakers. Here's a pic of the progress to date. I'm on vacation for 2 weeks so I won't see the rail completed until I get back.

ooh, how's that work? (the repair that is)

suaze 03-10-2012 11:46 PM

My coworker made a couple of aluminum pins to push into the eye holes. When the pin was pushed into the body, the aluminum from the pin shears with the aluminum in the body. I filed off the excess on the inside and outside leaving barely visible witness lines on the outside. The rail is a more difficult fix. I'll post pics when I get it back.

awesome, any risk of the plug coming out?

suaze 03-11-2012 12:22 AM

The pin is pressed in there good. It's not going anywhere. The pin was probably a few thousandth of an inch larger than the hole. Keep in mind I'm a desk jockey not a toolmaker/machinist.

Spent some time making a foregrip. The rail still has blemishes but I'll work on it when I have some time. A bit more sanding, polishing then off to get splash annodized. I really happy with the results so far.

Alright, I give up. That horn on the bottom looks awfully precise, is it more than decoration?

sQuidvision 04-20-2012 07:00 PM

bottle opener? ;)

The foregrip is the offspring of the Dallara + Airwalk. I carry my marker by the reg sometimes so I made a snatch grip at the base since I don't like gas through. Bottle opener...hmmm... I might need to rework the grip a little...

I'm really looking forward to shooting it tomorrow and I'm 100% sure that I won't be selling this mag. I got a lot of love for this mag since I put so much time into it.
