trouble shooting my mag

Hey every one. Getting back into mags from cockers and ran into an issue with mine. Was using it last time I played (bout 3 weeks ago now) and ran into an issue where my bolt wouldn't fully return unless I pulled the trigger a second time. At first I thought that it was due to a chopped ball (using old paint) so I just set her to the side and finished the day up with my pump. After I cleaned her up and re-gassed her up she had the same problem, plus started leaking out the rear. I added oil, re seated the plug in the back portion (I've really been out o mags awhile, can't even remember the part names) and it continued. Just wondering how to fix my issues. Also of note I have a classic valve with an ans stage 2 as the back portion.

Thanks for the help in advance (and helping me re-learn my mag troubleshooting)

Is it with level 7 bolt or level 10 bolt?

Things to check:
1.That the field strip screw isn't too tight or too loose. This can on some rails cause the valve to be just a little miss aligned and that may cause bolt sticking.
2. Is the bolt spring in good shape?
3. Do you have the old spring type powertube spacer or the newer solid spacers? If spring type it could be that it's needs replacement. If it's the solid kind are you sure it's the right length? (this assumes you are using level 7 bolt)
4. Is the sear properly adjusted and not too worn?

It is lvl 7

The field strip screw is hand tightened and has no wiggle (its an elclipse rail of that helps)
The bolt spring is new (can't say brand new because I have no idea how long the parts kit it came out of has been sitting there)
As far ad the spacers go I haven't checked. The valve worked for mos of the day so i assumed it was right
And I have no idea about the sear, going to have to check it.

But would all that cause the leaking from the rear too?

If it's leaking out of the adjuster, that's the reg piston o-ring or the reg seat (through the piston relief).

Could you tell if it was shooting hot?

When you hold the trigger back, does the leak stop (if the bolt was leaking)?

Was it leaking when the bolt wasn't back all of the way?

Do you have your rail bushing in place?

Don't forget the sticky...

Have you watched Tom Kaye's Automag videos? This installment discusses velocity and leaks: AUTOMAG TROUBLESHOOTING - YouTube

Haven't seen the vid yet. But I have gone over the sticky. Should probably do that while ripping it appart this weekend just to bounce it off of.

As for the reg it isn't the same as I remember in my other nags. Instead of springs it has a weird pistion. I think I'll completely rip it appart and post pics this weekend so you guys have a better idea of what I'm working with. (and to make sure I put it together right)

JonM thanks for the vid after watching it and working my mag I figured out my problem. My trigger valve orings (both Teflon and regular) were shot. I replaced them and now she is working perfectly thanks again.

Now its time foe a Lvl 10 and ULE body

Happy to help! I've found Tom's videos to be a great resource for learning the ins & outs of the Automag. The rest of the nine-part series can be found here.

I've been going thru them. Its pretty fun learning mags as in depth as I did cockers. Makes me feel new to the sport again

I know exactly how you feel. I've owned my cocker since '99. I've only just recently gotten my first Mag. Those videos helped me almost as much as they helped you.
