I know it isn't an option for everyone, but if you want to have the performance of an automag in that cold of a climate I would recommend HPA/Nitro. Then you can play in even the worst of conditions.

The Pro/Carbine should function just fine in the freezing cold. I've had a lot of use with them and they work great. I don't like them as much as my Automag, but when it becomes the difference of working and not working, I'll take what works. A Pro/Carbine with a Palmer's Reg and anti-siphon should be a very dependable performer.

Make sure you get some tough paint! Anything you get is going to be brittle as heck when its cold out.
Thanks for the help. Now, when you say "function just fine", do you mean it will always shoot a ball, or will it shoot a ball well? I have thought about HPA, but I cannot stand the weight and bulk of the tanks. I could get a 22/3000, and I would not mind the size, but I doubt I can get many shots from that on a Mag...

sorry, i was assuming you were considering a newer 98, a5 or x7. even in the mild cold we have had thus far, breakage of plastic parts has been a huge problem and i have seen many start leaking for no apparent reason, only to seal fine when they were brought indoors for awhile.

my mag, running regular CO2 has not gone down once, or even hinted at freezing up, i just started using light sewing machine oil instead of my regular oil

If you get a medium-sized fiber wrapped tank like a 68/3000, the weight is comparable to a 16 or 20 oz CO2 tank. It's a little longer, but with the right drop forward, it can be very comfortable.

I switched to HPA on everything a few years ago, and the shot to shot consistency/performance is leaps and bounds ahead of CO2. I play in sub-freezing temps all winter, and I'd rather use HPA than CO2. That being said, some guns run great on CO2 in the cold, like my Typhoon.

Run the Mag on A/S CO2 with the Stab wide open, and run a few loops on the hose from the VA to the AIR valve. You won't have too many problems unless you really lean on the trigger.

That being said, USE HPA - you won't have any problems at all in the cold.

Instead off anti-siphon, get a siphon kit and run it with a tippmann. The older the better.

For cold weather, that is your best bet.

Tippmanns were made to be tough guns especially when it comes to weather.

I guess I may have to give Tippmanns another try. I was unimpressed with performance when I had an A5, but I think a different barrel and liquid CO2 might be better. I think a Pro/Carbine with a Lapco Bigshot and a siphon tank might work well... not really sure though.

The thing is, I would gladly run the risk of freezing, and shoot very slowly to still have the good performance of a Mag. I hope a Tippmann can deliver...

for a successful cold weather automag you are going to have to us HPA.

For a really cold weather tippmann, you dont want a stabilizer, strait liquid. Siphon tank. Yum.

Cold weather montneel with siphon tank dominates too.

But for a mag, its going to need HPA to work.

You need a winter valved Monteel for sure with a sipihon tank. They love the cold, and in fact almost work better when the weather sucks. Mind you it sounds like you're done with Monteels now, selling the rest of your parts

(Cough cough W valved Monteel Rental Z anyone)

I know, I know. Montneels are great in the winter. I am going to give mine a test tomorrow to see how she's acting, but in the meantime, I found a 98C locally for dirt cheap... I will run a siphon on that.

That being said, now that I have a 'serious' winter gun taken care of, I may start work on a Mag project...

IDKFA,
I know this sounds silly coming from me, (considering the fact that your helping me get my Z1 working) but everyone here in Utah has been telling me to switch to HPA for my automag to eliminate the cold weather problems. Dont know if I sent this pic to you or not.
one project at a time. I'm

BIG air tank. I use my Xmag in the winter with a 88/3000 and it works fine... Mags are something of a gashog anyway, and I find that with my lvl.10 perfectly tuned the cold weather seems to empty a tank faster than usual, hence large capacity and steel manufacturing.
