It is true the early mags were outranged, but that is because the earliest mags suffered from extreme dropoff problems. This combined with the early mags SPIKE problems would give the impression that accuracy and range was terrible.

Those problems were eventually addressed, and had nothing to do with SP "snake oil". Notice that the "Magic Box" was never incorportated into the SP design

Prior to the "Magic Box" mod I was consistantly out-ranged by Autocockers, after this mod we were able to stand back and long-ball the cockers.

That was NO HYPE! that was fact, that showed up in every tournament starting in spring of 93.

The "Smartmag" did the same thing by increasing the air chamber behind the bolt by machining it to closer tolerances than the AGD Valves. This gave an internal expansion area that was bigger and did the same thing as the "Magic Box".

Both worked very well, and it help myself and sponsored teams like Texas Storm, Jax Warriors, and All Americans kick *** for quite a while.
And here we have an exhibit why the bunch of liars, cheats and thieves known as Smart Parts has managed to do so well for themselves, despite having only produced a single useful product themselves and gotten away with stealing designs and patents from the rest of the industry.

Smart Mag

Magic Box

Smart Mag was supposedly a revamped valve from AGD. AGD drilled 8 holes in the valve and made the inner walls thinner to increase the pressure going into the chamber. This was taken from the infamous PBNtion vs BGardner thread and a post by TK himself:

Magic Box
In the mid nineties there was a conversion from CO2 to compressed air. We supported the Magic Box based on the following statement. "When you switched to compressed air your working pressure in the chamber went up. The increased volume of the Black Box brought that pressure back down to where it was with CO2 so your marker felt the same when you shot it." We never supported any claims beyond that.

We had warranty issues with the modifications since they tended to leak. Smart Parts was a huge customer of ours and we wanted to make them happy, so we offered to drill extra holes along the on/off to expand the chamber and offered SP that valve instead of the Black Box. They did but the product tapered off quickly anyway. In later generations of the stock valve we made the walls thinner to increase the volume. Volume increases happened in every version of the valve starting with 5.0 and earlier prototypes.
Although the Smart Mag and Magic Box were introduced at the same time, they were different. Supposedly, the Smart Mag had the Magic Box mod built into the valve itself.

To make this statement you also MUST also mention that you have to negate any spin... especially BACK SPIN on the ball.

That was a truly epic thread if I may say so myself.

If you mean the PBN thread where Gardner showed up, epic is the right word.

I think I recall reading somewhere that the black box was little more than a piece of tubing...I can't remember where, though. However, if that's the case, than a couple of hours with a drill and tap, a few little bits from the hardware store, and some thread sealer, and one could theoretically make one for a few dollars, instead of however much they cost originally.

I think Doc and several others said that in the aforementioned epic thread on PBnation.

The Magic Box was $1 of aluminum, two cheap 1/8" NPT fittings and $0.50 of brass pipe.

On the upside, if you tilted your Magic Box mag to the side, you could have a couple of hot shots that WOULD outdistance the competitors' shots.
