The dump chamber is smaller so that you couldnt raise the velocity past a certain point.

Im not sure if there is anything you can do about it.

I thought there was another difference in the on/off or powertube too.

i think the rental designation was merely for the field's use not necessarily any change of the design.

There's a restriction left in the power tube that works like an orifice to keep the velocity restricted to around 280 fps. The restriction keeps it from being able to use a level 10 bolt, which has a longer stem than the level 7. The restriction can be drilled out, at which point there will be no difference with a classic mag valve. They're particularly good for sleeper projects and polishing.

Rental valve

Level 10's do not fit on rental valves and they have built in flow restrictors to keep velocities below the 280 level.

EDIT: Doh, what was said above me. I'm too slow.

Great thanks. Every time I find a good deal on a classic mag it turns out to be a rental.

Rental Valves are great for pump mags.

Yeah, the level 10 thing is the only real 'problem', and not for a pump.

I used to know a 'new professional' engraver (cheaper) that I wished I could get him to dress one up for me.

That, or a sleeper pneu.
