Short mag barrel

I have a half finished classic mag pistol project that I might finish one of these days and I was wondering how short can the barrel be and still be effective? Also what is the length of a sydarm barrel?

Sydarm = 6.5" they were centerfeed only.
Minimag = 8" powerfeed left or right.

I believe it as tested and shown that only the first 4-4.5" matter.

I'm thinking of setting up a short barreled mag, and I was considering going with just a python kit and getting the 2" barrel tip for it, Just food for thought.

My normal barrel is a 4" cocker threaded into a noxx adapter. It might top out at 6.5-7" or so. It also worked great by itself on my cocker, It doesn't even extend to the end of the shroud.

On the 8" crown point barrels that I use, the 'crown' porting starts at about 5.5 inches. So you can go at least short as that without velocity problems.

I have an 8 inch SP Venturi barrel if you're interested in it.

I have an 8 in armson on mine (new for like 40 bucks from their site), and the tip comes out to just the end of the springfeed. It works pretty well for a pistol. Like someone else said earlier, only the first couple inches matter anyway.

i have plans to add a WWA or Doc's short tip to the freak TwistLock back that i have that puts the total leangth to around 7" (less then 5" exposed i think). i agree with 99GenX on the length.. i remember hearing/reading on one of the T.K. studies that the ball hit terminal velocity by the 5" mark (hence why most 2 piece backs are 5-6 inch long).

also once your barrel starts porting the air will push out rather then continue to push the ball, path of least resistance. so you could use that as a referance point if you were to custom cut your barrel.
