Boring Acrylic Tube

Would it be possible for someone to bore out some acrylic tube for me?
I'm thinking about making an acrylic bodied Sheridan.

The tube is .875 OD (roughly same as a normal sheridan) and ID is .625, but would need to be bored out to .775"; and the barrel tube to .678", and feed tube to $.756.

If possible turning down the barrel tube and top tube to .812 would be preferred, otherwise I could lengthen the slot for the bolt post.

thanks in advance.

You better off getting it extruded to what you need. Mostly because Im willing to bet it would explode or shatter when getting that thin while boring.

EDIT: Your whole idea while neat is totally flawed.... Your talking about getting acrylic down to .100 left on the stock.. thats .05 wall a stiff breeze will crack that.

I could always go bigger on the outer diameter, going up to 1" or so would be fine. I could always go nelson style instead of sheridan anyways.

I just figured an acrylic body would be great. I'll look into how thin acrylic can be bored, thinnest wall I saw was .125", which would put it into the range of 1 inch OD. could use a T2 frame then

yea I agree w/ BOS on this. Lexan/polycarb would be a better choice, but you still run into durability issues. Not to mention surface finish issues. While possible it would likely not come out the way your picturing it.

Mcmaster has both the acrylic and polycarb tube; so sourcing material wouldn't be a problem. this would be more of a wall hanger than a playing marker, but I would want to use it at least a few times for fun.

Here's a short barrel doc's machine did, that's basically what I'm going for, but over 8-10 inches.

From the thread, he used acrylic, slow lathe speeds, and sharp tools and that worked. For the polish he used a "block of white rouge and a new polishing wheel."

Doc makes working with everything sound way easier than it is actually.

Acrylic is a bastard to work with.... feed to much it cracks, speed to high it melts, and worse yet it smells to high heaven.

definitely better off trying it with polycarbonate, it will actually survive the machine operations.

I had an experience several years back which involved heated volatile gas, 3" diameter acrylic tube, and a huge explosion... I will say no more, except that I don't trust acrylic for anything mechanical or pressurized in nature, and never will again.

Both Lexan and Acrylic would have durability issues... Cracking. Even though lexan is stronger.

It might be worth it to look into clear rigid PVC. It's expensive, but it's a lot less brittle than either of the previous options.

I like the project, I just wish it would be easier to pull off!
