I think this would be cheaper than a house dimmer and have a better chance of working.
The label says 10k RPMs, but I had seen that (typo) before on the Grainger page.

I have looked at various ones on ebay, but can't find what looks to me like the right one. That one says it's range is from 0-22V. Others that are meant for 110V say they regulate 10-110V, so no real good way to get an 'off' mode without using a seperate switch. I have an on/off in the current control box, but the old dial would give me a zero RPM output, not turning slowly as soon as I flipped the switch.

Wouldn't bug me too much though, so if it's the last off the shelf option, I could live with it.

Thanks for the heads up. I sent the seller of the item above a question about the dial. Just want to make sure it's easily rotated instead of getting locked into a high, medium, or low speed. That would be a touch limiting.

As i recall it rotates no locks have one at home. Used it on my dremal type motor setup. before i went to a foot pedal setup. for the dremal setup it better to have more control of speed as you go rather then havingto stop and adjust. Shouldn't be an issue with a lathe .

if he dosent get back to by morning. i`ll let you know when i get home. just to be sure.

Just checked mine it exactly the same. It's full range of control, No set perimeters. Should work fine for your needs.

bahh fricken press. I was having such a good day in the shop everything was just clicking I made like 30 or so widgets for my next production run and my next step was to broach a 1/8" hex thru the center. Well my arbor press does not have quite enough room to do the job in one go so I kinda had to fudge it. Well it was working ok-ish for a while until the broach got just a bit cockeyed and BLAM broach shatters into 5 pieces. A 100 buck broach gone Well I guess I know what my next shop mod is going to involve.

Thanks. I picked one up, but was away all weekend and haven't had a chance to take the old board out of the loop. It's on the list of things to do today.

So, check this out. I remove the old electronics so there is just a cord to the motor. Plug that into the speed controller, plug the controller in. In the off position, nothing... good. Turn it to the variable switch and it goes full bore, no matter the dial position. WTF?

That's not supposed to be possible is it?
