Solenoids: How do they work?

How exactly does a solenoid work?

The solenoid part itself is just an electromagnetic coil around a post--running current through it creates a magnetic field, shoving (or pulling) said post from one side to the other. Somone, correct me if I'm off.

A solenoid valve is just a 3-, 4-, or whatever-way valve--like a 'cocker 3-way-- with the shaft hooked to the solenoid shaft, so the 'noid pushes (or pulls) it to one side when it gets current.

So, for the most part, if you *really* can't find an electronic valve for a project 'gun, and you're good with tools, you can buy an actual solenoid and make a valve to match it, but it's rarely time or cost effective.
