USPS may not give a standard tracking number but they DO provide a customs number that can be used to track the package in a more limited capacity.

Shipping accross the boarder does take longer...BUT the last 5 or so items I have received out of the US have arrived in less than two weeks. I don't know if that is an anomoly or if USPS and Canada post have finally got together to improve service. I do know that it is now possible to get 4 day shipping to the US from Canada now, maybe USPS has introduced something similar.

Customs does seem to be getting faster, especially if the package is marked correctly as stated in the first post.

Shipping to Canada is not scary! And now that our dollar is worth more than the USD there is going to be a LOT more transboarder shipping requests!

Many people do not ship outside the US on ebay, etc for this very reason. No seller protection. Sure it shows it shipped, but it doesn't show it as delivered.
I recently shipped a CCM s6 to CAD.
Was gonna have it insured for $600. The teller told me that the person receiving would have to pay a hefty fee for that, and so to insure my self that the package actually was properly received, I requested a proof of signature instead, and saved the buyer a load of cash.

THE-SHOOTIST Anyone chubbin' like me for this?
mailmanmike Since Monday! That's more than 4 hours though, so according to those cialis ads I should see my doctor.
tlane77 I think for a non-chemical chubby it's 6 hours before its time to see a doctor. So you should be good for another couple hours.
splattttttt I wasn't goin to google "chubbin" because I assumed it had to do with fat. The lard type, not the fun stuff. But what ever feelings Jeff's experiencing, then they must be of the fun like stuff...

I figured those were the top reasons why some sellers won't do it.

I don't mind sending stuff to people in Canada as long as shipping is covered

Now I didn't know that about Insurance. Signature Confirmation is available still?

This is a very helpful thread. They definitely don't like "GUNS" in canada. i've dealt with some horrible issues with the customs before, but overall most of the shipments were very simple and straight forward other than having to fill out the customs forms which takes a little bit of extra time.

Thanks goes out to lego maniac for revealing this... but I wanted to start another thread since his post was buried in an exhaust thread.

So... when you receive a package from the States... UPS charges you applicable duty and taxes plus the dreaded brokerage fees. The brokerage fees are UPS' charges for physically clearing your package through customs.

So... if you don't want to pay brokerage fees... don't let UPS clear the package thru customs for you. Do it yourself! This can be done in two ways... either tell the person who's shipping the package to inform UPS that you will be clearing the item thru customs yourself... or get the tracking number and call UPS to let them know you would like to clear the item yourself and to let you know when the item arrives.

So for example for somebody in Toronto you'd have to goto Pearson Airport. Once there you get the paper work for the item and have to make the payment for duties/taxes. The UPS lady told me the customs clearance center is in the same facilities... so it's not like you're going to have to drive around town to do this.

Then just show the appropriate person that you paid the taxes (cleared customs) and the package is yours... minus the brokerage fees!
Sooooo....Aperantly you can just call UPS and tell them you want to self declare any package coming in from the US, you just need to ask what customs crossing they are going to use (not that many in Canada). They or CBSA will call you/send and email...saying you have a package at customs. You then call down and self declare that you are going to recieve the package, what it is, how much it cost...CBSA will then tell you what the applicable duties are (presumably payable via credit card over the phone...? don't quote me on that). then it is given back to UPS/FedEx...to be delivered to you! NO BROKERAGE FEE!!! HOORAY!!

UPS is just too much hassle and extra work compared to USPS.

no kidding! But now if some one does get something shipped via UPS or fedex they now know what to do to avoid the bogus brokerage fees

the thing is that the customs are requesting the taxes on the declared value of the goods
therefore it would have cost him around 85$ to receive it in my province ( Quebec )
He would need to pay the postman that amount when he comes to do the delivery, in cash... otherwise he can go claim it the next day at the post office...

anything under the 60$ mark will not require the Canadian Postal service to take money for the taxes... so you really have to be cautious about that when you order something from the US and know what the seller wants to do, you can be burnt up pretty bad sometimes because you completely forget about such things...

Americans are quite lucky to have flat rate boxes and no taxes when you order online, we got pricing depending on the weight and we rarely get to skip on those... well not like it's such a bad thing, having roads and not paying for hospitalization is nice, but that's not related to this thread at all...

Taxes on packages is hit or miss, some times it happens, sometimes it doesn't. It's definitely worth insuring a package at full value. To do any less with anything over $200 is stupidity.
