The cheapest option is just to thread it in a lathe :P

No thats the most expensive.

Cheapest Huron Industrial Supply - Nationwide Source for Industrial Supplies & Equipment in Michigan: 9/16-20 High Speed Steel Right Hand Special Thread Hand Plug Tap

This is the place I buy my taps.
Enco - Guaranteed Lowest Prices on Machinery, Tools and Shop Supplies

On weird taps (like a/c threads) they're the cheapest but not on everything.

Also are you sure you need nps and not npt?

Thanks, but I'm not skilled enough to use a lahte, perception

And Leafy, 1/2 NPS is the ASA thread I think. So I can make an (no On/Off, just a normal) ASA built-in to my gripframe. But right know Im just checking.

1/2" NPS at Victornet.net Look about 1/2 to 2/3 the way down the page for the National Pipe Straight, versus the tapered ones at the top.

I expect ASA threads to be tough by hand. I would get a plug tap to start the threads and a bottom tap to finish with. I doubt a taper tap would even start in that shallow depth.

Buy a little can of cutting fluid if you don't have any.

That VME site is nice, Ty.

I just bought this one: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...R78SJVZGHZKYBH

But, the threads were already cut and I just had to chase them. It's a bottoming tap if you need it though, since I would agree with the plug first, bottoming second.
