Some of those old school tank and reg cradle set ups had larger threads than the screw in tank and reg set ups. I don't remember if the Nitro Duck reg was one that was universal or not.

Were there different series of tanks by nitroduck that had different regs?

My buddy had a nitroduck mega reg tank that has a bigger thread... its now useless to him because the reg is in need of repair. We have asked Ninja to make a reg with those threads and they more or less said "your better off buying a new tank"

nitroduck tanks came in 2 thread sizes, either the standard, or the dreaded 3/4" thread.. it was really a turkey shoot as to what you got, i have an old ND bottle, that is useless. because theres no reg to screw into it. if i remember ND, and a couple ACI tanks had that goofy thread.. no-one else
really, it depends on what your reg was, some of the SS4500's were on regular bottles, some werent, really, anything pre "mega-reg" was a toss up to wether or not you got one with the other thread
i say if it works, trade it if someone wants to trade you, if you wana keep it, keep it. the fact that its working is odd enough,, so might as well get what use out of it that you can, cause its soon to be useless
