I'm pretty sure Space Guns were comps that customers had requested vert air adapters on.

Yes, but they didn't always come with a VA. Notice the early style, attached to the trigger frame. I'm sure once it became popular enough, Carter started to make it standard.

Here's a post on the subject from rec.sport.paintball, 1999.

Quote:
The Phantoms vertical set up was derived from the Carter "Space gun" set up. Originally, before vertical was popular, Carter added the vertical (its actually the angle of the front of the trigger guard) to some players who requested it on their existing comps (circa 1990). The problem was that the undercocking mechinism gets in the way of a traditional frame mounted vertical set up (they were originally configured for back bottle). To get around this Carter attached the vertical on the trigger guard (which is very robust on a Carter). The Phantoms utilize this method cause its also a very cost effective way of adding vertical w/out a lot of user grief or returns to the factory. If you want vertical on a comp now you just need to request it when ordering or you can have him do it "space gun" style. The Phantom is certainly less expensive than the Carter and works very well. The Carter has SS snub and a myriad of custom options. So your budget and actual desires will probably determine whats better for you. Performance wise, both Carters and Phantoms are excellent, w/both being the significant surving Nelson based guns.

Yes the old girl is looking her age. I have no plans on selling her, but would like to freshen her up a bit and bring her back to her previous glory.
