A good coat of turtle wax (or other automotive wax) will keep oxidation away for quite a while. If you already have tarnish happening then brasso works wonders. If you don't have access to it try white vinegar (what I often use if its slight) on it.

BRASSO.... Is your friend.

That's what I use, but it will oxidize again.

it's going to tarnish no matter what you put on it really. that's the bad thing about polished brass. the thing to do is make sure you polish it before storage and don't touch it with your fingers any. some people use car wax, brasso, etc... i like Nevr-Dul the best by far. i prefer it over brasso 10 to 1. it's easy to use and the gun will keep a shine until the next day of play. when your done playing repeat the process to get all your fingerprints off and she's ready for storage.

and there is the option of having the gun clear coated. Dura-Coat sells a clear coat that they say will not turn yellowish like other clear coats do over time. with the Dura-Coat clear you'll never have to worry about tarnish or fingerprints.

here's a link to a whole thread i did about it:

Brass Up Keep Thread - The Underground Forum

if you have opted for a polished open Brass finish;
to keep the OUTER SURFACES from oxidizing give the OUTER SURFACES
of your marker 2 coats of AUTOMOTIVE WAX aka CAR WAX.
i personally recommend LIQUID LUSTER also called PINK CADILLAC WAX.

2 coats of this will keep the Brass from oxidizing for years!
but give her an extra coat every other time you play and your marker will never oxidize.

NEVER EVER USE WAX OR ANY OTHER COATING IN THE BORE OF YOUR BRASS BARREL!!
YOU WANT THE PURE OPEN BRASS TO CONTACT THE BALL SO NEVER EVER USE A COATING IN THE BORE OF YOUR BRASS BARREL.

to prolong the shine/finish of the bore of your Brass Barrel
store the barrel in a plastic bag and suck the air out,
seal it nice and tight and you will get much more mileage out of your barrels finish.
the "tarnish" is oxidization, if there is little to no oxygen the Brass can not oxidize.
( or more correctly you slow the effect dramatically because you barrel is not in a vacuum)

to polish the bore of your barrel
i recommend getting a 1/4" dowel 16" long,
a can of NEVER-DULL metal polish wadding (it looks like cotton batten from hell)
put the dowel in your hand drill,
affix some of the NEVER-DULL batten with rubber bands to the dowel,
once inserted in your barrel you let her spin pushing the dowel in and out of the barrel,
then buff her out with a big fuzzy swab.
(note you can run the swab through the laundry so that you can get several cleanings before it's trash)

I've polished brass parts on my autococker with Brasso, and then I rubbed a liberal coat of Marvel Mystery Airtool Oil on the brass. I think that might help slow the oxidation.

I used to polish my brass and then I discovered that it was more fun to shoot it at people.

Masturbation is a healthier and much more satisfying use for your polishing skills.

The plastic bag trick is a good one. Also they sell cans of nitrogen or some other inert gas that is often used for flooding into the tops of partially used wine to prevent oxidation for a while. A shot of that into the bag and then a second burping to vent out any displaced oxygen bearing air won't totally eliminate the oxygen but it'll reduce the level further.

I'd have to try it but we all have ready access to CO2. I'm wondering if a healthy shot of that into the bag to displace the oxygen bearing air would work.

I've used Eagle brand Wet One car wax to help polish and protect aluminium bicycle parts that I'd sanded down. They held up very well over the years with occasional reapplications about once every fall before the winter commuting season. I'm planning on trying it on my SB when it's all cleaned up.

Another thought that'll help is to wear white cotton gloves while handling your brass markers. Playing with them will add a mystique to your reputation. Wearing a butler's tux will add the crowning touch....

Do they make plastic bags in KP size?

I've had decent luck with my shiny brass. Once I shine it really well, I just make sure to keep fingerprints off it and the shine tends to stay for a good amount of time. Then again I tend to wipe it down with water or a swab with rubbing alcohol after use to get the gunk off.

But keep in mind I enjoy shining things. It's fun, and gives me something to do while relaxing in the evenings.

When polishing I have used Brasso. Use it in a well ventilated area. That's my main tip.
