just get a phantom for now, you can always sell it later to "upgrade" to another pump...

Go to Vintage Rex and check out the older pumps.

Good luck in your search.

There are basicly 3 common types of pumps (there are a few more but I'll stick to the common types)

Nelson- Inline pump gun. This design was used in the Nelson Nel-Spot 007( the gun that started the sport) All gun that utilise this tpye of valve layout are generaly called "nelsons". There are two types of nelsons, breach drop (the origonal) and bore drop. Bore drop was popular back in the day but due to ever changing paint sizes if no longer practical with out modifications(ball slices, roll outs, ect) Breach drop is still produced, guns like the Lapco Grey ghost, phantom and carter's use this type of bolt.

Sheridan- Stacked tube design- Origionly used for the sheridan PG, and later PGP and all subseqent sheridan and PMI models. Most generaly made of brass. This design allthough not as simple or efficiant as the nelsons is easy to customise. It is also the same valve design used in the WGP sniper and autococker. A blowback(semi-auto) version of this design was used in the sheridan VM68/PMI III, which gave rise to Spyders and all clones therafter. Palmers uses this type of design for there products

Sterling- sheridan nelson hybrid- A system which uses a sheridan esqe valve and nelson hammer. There are also a fe semiauto versions of this design, of note the Air Power Vector (and HT8R) as well as the brass eagle Rainmaker.

i think the important questions are...

1. how much are you wanting to spend?

2. do you plan on using CA or 12 grams?

3. do you want a stock class gun, direct feed, or both?

also, what type of semi's are you familiar with already? you may want a pump that is in the same family if possible. for example... if you own an Autococker you might want a Sniper or CCM for a pump.

If you're looking to do this on a serious budget at this point then don't forget the serious budgetary pumps...

Maverick, Trracer, Tagmaster, Tippy SL68II. Any of these or the other old tyme Nelson style pumps can typically be gotten for much less than a $100 bill. Heck, you can buy a brand new fresh production Maverick for $80.

And just to pay back a little homage the SL in my avatar is there for a reason. And best of all it comes with a nicely built in bottom line that is just begging to take a 9oz and go pick out some face masks... Don't let the hunk o' water pipe barrel fool you. It's a bit loud but it's as good as my other most accurate ported barrel when you're shooting decent paint.
