How many freak inserts?

I'm considering getting my phantom barrel drilled for freak inserts primarily to stop roll outs and was wondering how many inserts are really necessary. To me it seems like some of the very small and large sizes would not be useful. What sizes do you find you use the most, what ones you never use? Do you think I should just pick up 3-4 of the most useful, or go for the full set?

All I use is 679. I own Reball 675 679 684 687.

Just up to the paint you get and how consistent it is in size and brand.

On my markers I use a .679 bore. No rollouts ever. Never break paint either.

The smallest are actually the most useful. The smallest I have is .679 and I really need to order some smaller. I never use anything as large as a .690.

really depends on your area - as mentioned above some people been seeing ULTRA small paint

That having been said - do the math

say you go aluminum - $12.50/ea or $75 for 8 + $25 for 2 smaller == every bore size possible for $100

Say you go Brass - 4 sizes typically in stock not sure price on each check Ty's thread - but you would be supporting a custom smith (some folks have a few issues with the SP/GOG owner business practices and thus refuse to own SP/GOG product) reviews of Ty's work have been consistently fantastic see the review section

Say you go stainless - $20/ea 8 piece kit for $110 + 3 sizes not in kit $60 total cost $170 for maximum size count

Between the aluminum and stainless kits there is a huge difference in price BUT the long term use of stainless is much more durable and historically more consistent (GOG/SP was not exactly precise in some of their aluminum bore size kits) My advice if you choose GOG/SP go stainless if you can afford it.

finally - I must mention the SM1 Orbium 3 style kit - having now extensively tested it I find there is something to be said about having THREADED backs. they lock into place and do not float at all, consistency has been fantastic, and versatility has been good for my purposes =P not as flexible as gog/sp inserts because they are threaded both into the control sleeve AND back to the body so each back is of a specific type. But the product thus far has exceeded all my expectations and having 3 tips off the bat + a raincover has been a ton of fun =)

anyhow good luck choosing =)

Stitch... Thanks for the plug

My inserts run $30 each. I have in stock .670, .675, .678, .680 and .685

Typically, most of my customers prefer the .675 insert. If you were going to buy 2, I would suggest a .675 and .680 if you wanted a third, it is an even toss up between a .678 or a .685. As it stands, the .670 only seems to be necessary on the coldest of days, when paint is at its smallest. (Though I did have a rollout issue with a .670 using some truly tiny paint!)

minimalist seems the fashion these days - myself I tend to get the full run just so that if ever I NEED I have - because it is far better to have and not want than it is to want and not have....=P

also as an fyi - over the last 5 months my paint here in Cali has been ranging between .681 and .686 for Evil and Marbs with oddly enough ONE bag of ultra coming in the smallest at .679 (the other 3 were .681 and the regular evil usually between .682 and .684 for me lol)

so paint does vary and a year from now may range large again if they change formula /shrug

which leads me back to having full sets if its feasible =P

/salute
