Paintball Radar: watch where you point it

No, not for safety reasons.

I've spoken with Al Dilz who markets the Radarchron and Radarchron ROF models and he indicated he went with a power output way under the legal limit for this device type, for his own peace of mind.

No, you need to watch where you point your radar - OR IT WILL READ INCORRECTLY, as Canuck and I found out today.

We were using an EXCELLENT Radarchron ROF model today to prep two Dukie DSP markers for field use.

PAINTBALL RADARchron® Rate-Of-Fire

This model of radar has a stand that lets it sit on a flat surface.
We had it sitting on concrete and we thought nothing of it.

We spent about 8 hours today test firing over the chrono getting erratic, nonsensical readings ranging from 150fps to 400+ fps.

How the latter was possible without the marker exploding should have been a clue.

We tried dozens of parts combinations including reassembling a bone stock Phantom again with no consistency.

I suggested we put it on a tripod just for ease of use - a bit higher, less awkward.

Tripod installed and bam - all the readings changed - more stable and much higher.

*** *** ***

I've used other radar before - aircraft radar weather and terrain warning systems - but never thought for a moment to be careful how close to the ground we had this thing.

We've always placed the chrono on a table, four feet from the ground so this never came up.

Yeah, that was a time consuming lesson.

So what's bad, the ground or the concrete?

Concrete, along with all of the re-bar and metal mesh in it, is a great reflector of electromagnetic energy... We should have known!

Good to know, thanks CJOttawa and Canuck. Any special notes about the Pocket RADARchrono from Al as well? I have been using one for years and trust my readings, but many refs that carry them either do not know how to use them or know how to read them correctly. They check with the pocket and then go right back to the Big Reds.

I use the handheld X Radar style and it's very consistent and reliable. if you need something more advanced, the shooting chrony units are nice.

Extra tall table? is it safe to assume that standard height (34-38") tables will move the chrono sufficiently far enough away from metallic objects to eliminate interference? (sorry to nit pic)

good bit of experience to heed if your chrono is acting funny

It should be noted that the tripod used only brought the chrono 6 inches off the ground - just enough to make a difference...

don't point it at overhead military planes either. a buddy of mine found out that you don't point radar guns at stealth fighters flying overhead near an air force base. got a little call from the military since it set off a bunch of their targeting warnings. this may not be that strong but would be crazy if it worked the same.

I doubt a paintball radarchron has enough power to set off a threat alert on a military aircraft. If it did, anyone with a walkie-talkie would be making C-130 pilots **** bricks.

A professional, speed trap radar... that might be another story.
