Here's how I'd deal with it. "Buttoning". Drill the punp handle at the four corners for , oh, let's say 10-32 screws. Install 10-32 black nylon screws and leave them proud (.013 was the slop, right?) .007. Use CA glue to lock them in place. Cut flush with the exterior and polish smooth.

This is a common technique with springer airguns to reduce metal to metal contact during the firing cycle, and smooth the cocking stroke.

That's a really good idea, that would probably be the easiest and best "at home" solution.
