AirAmerica / SmartParts "SmartRemote" System... Anyone remember them? Any details?

I've got one of these: "Air America "Smart Remote".

What are they worth? I know AirAmerica schwag goes for a lot, but I also know that RonASP overcharges and it's probably not worth the $85 that he wants for it. It's got a scratch on the airhose, but it's in otherwise good condition...

Also, anyone know how AirAmerica and SP happened to come together on something like this? I'd love some history to go with the item (that is if I don't sell it).

Damn... And here I thought I had a find! I vaguely remember using it once, but I had so many VMs that using a remote was damn near sacrilige because they could carry so many bottles onboard

Any idea of a value?

They were infamous, and were recalled by Smart Parts at one point.

The design itself was pretty smart. The E/C was a very high quality AA design utilizing a ton of surface area. By moving it to the remote, it could also do a better job of transfering thermal energy to the tank to help minimize shootdown.

The problem was they originally came with a BRASS transfer tube that went from the E/C to the tank ASA. The problem is that if the user slide, and fell on his back, the tube would often SNAP, which would then dump the contents of a 20oz tank DIRECTLY onto his back.

This happened so often in 1994 (?) that we started calling it the "Smart Parts Dance" as the user frantically jumped around while trying to reach his tank. (They didn't come with an on/off valve). So, smart parts recalled them, and swapped the brass-tube, for an ugly steel tube. They did something similar with the magic-box as well.

Value? Ron-ASP basis value on the "HOw bad do you want it" theory. To a collector, its probobly worth that amount, but functionally, you could make one easy enough with generic remote and E/C from ebay for $20 or so.

I picked one up on ebay, for I think it was 25 bucks. Has a steel pipe between asa and chamber. Works really good as far as Im concerned.

Hmmm well mine's the steel model. I guess I'll just hand on to it until someone offers me $40+ for it.

I figure selling it at half what RonASP wants is still overpriced, but someone'll take it.

I had one of these years ago (10+) used. And for me it was not the smart parts dance, it was the smart parts block the ghost punches from your face in the woods.

I never had my *** kicked from a piece of my own equipment before then.

all in all with the steel tube it was a great remote.
