Which spring for CCM/Merlin adapter?
So I just bought CCM Merlin adapter and CCM pump kit for my Merlin based Works cocker. Everything bolted up fine but I ran into issues with the valve spring. It seems like every Merlin has a different valve spring setup. Here are some pictures of what is going on. The tube on the top slides into my banjo bolt. I believe it is meant so the gun can run a standard nelson spring:
You can see that with the adapter, the valve stem is nowhere near where it needs to be. The question is, what spring do I need to make this work? I called Larry at AKA and he wasn't sure what the differences are between Merlin and Autococker springs. CCM is also gone until Monday. I go back to school Sunday so I won't be able to reference anything if I need to until the following week. Anybody have any idea what I should do? Thanks!
Did you bolt it up and try it? Or are you saying the standard nelson spring is too short? If its too short, then just ues/make a spacer that goes inside the tube and behind the spring.
By standard nelson spring, do you mean a nelson valve spring or main/hammer spring? As far as I understand, the nelson valve spring will fit in a cocker but probably will need some spacers if a couple coils were cut off to fit in a nelson's valve body properly (unless one was using an rtr valve body with the correct spring guide). The nelson main/hammer spring would work in as a cocker's main/hammer spring without modification.
Good luck! Maybe the good folks in the AKA (or possibly CCM) forum could help you with this?
I was wondering if there was an off the shelf spring that I could use to make it work. I don't really have the means to machine something myself ... If it comes down to it though I can take some measurements and go to a machine shop.
I suppose I should have phrased it better. The hammer spring is not the issue. The valve spring in the Works/Merlin is the exact same dimensions as a standard autococker valve spring. The metal sleeve was made to act as a spacer to allow a standard autococker valve spring to work. I was wondering if there is a spring that will allow me to use the CCM Merlin pump kit adapter without getting another spacer made.
Thanks for the input guys!
Could you take a pic of the two spring side by side, with labels as to which came from where? That would certainly help. Where did you get the springs you're using - one from AKA with the kit and the other from CCM with their adapter?
Here you are:
The autococker spring is slightly bigger in diameter upon taking a second look. The bottom picture is how the spring sits when inserted into the spacer. I am using the springs that came on the gun. I assume they are factory.
The spacer doesn't fit inside the ccm adapter, does it? Sometimes the fix is the most simple thing.
Anyways, doesn't the merlin come with a larger valve/cup seal? Can't really tell in the pic, and I could be mixing this up with the other aka cocker body kit.
No, the spacer is roughly the same diameter as the adapter. I thought the cup seal would be bigger as well, but it is pretty much identical to the standard autococker one. I will talk to CCM tomorrow and see what they suggest. I think I already know the answer though, just need to get something machined.
I will tell you again. You have a full lenght merlin bodied Works. They made the longer spacer and made their valve to work with stock cocker cupseal. They use standard lenght valve spring. AKA made pretty much all their merlin in mini lenght body. That's why the CCM merlin adapter seems short in your case, because it is made for a mini lenght body.
Send me a PM, I will make you a spacer.
Yeah that does make sense. I haven't seen many full length body Merlins at all. PM'd!
