Old Tanks

What do you do with old tanks?
I know about the rehydro process, but if they aren't worth rehydroing, what do you do?
What do you do with old scuba tanks!
Thanks.

Remove the valve/regulator and they go in the scrap pile. Occasionally I'll powder coat one just to use as a test piece.

I've used expired 20oz tanks as cores in the Blue Rhino CO2 exchange at my local Lowes.

Didn't see them last time I was there. Don't know if they still participate.

Walmart also had the exchange for 9oz & 20oz through Blue Rhino, but I've not seen a display in my local Walmarts in many years.

One of my team mates made a tool carrier for his VSC Phantom by cutting a section out of the side of the tank and made it into a door by adding hinges.
Screwed tank into ASA and had tools, 12 grams etc inside.

In Florida when I worked at the dive shop, we donated them to a local college and those tanks went to a reef project. Scuba tanks can get rehydrod, just depending on the tank, Alum or Steel for age reasons.

I dont think Scuba's have a life span, i have had Scuba's hydro'ed that were born in the 70s and it fact they are kinda in demand with some divers..

Keep getting them tested. I was talking to a guy in a PB shop in Phoenix a few years ago and he said they have a paintballer who brings in a tank from (IIRC) the late 50's. It still passes hydro and visual every time they do it.

The problem with most pre 84 tanks is that they are 1,800 psi although i have had a few steal 3200 psi .. I have fliped quite a few Scubas and as long as they are stored with some air they should be fine and pass with no issues ..

Do you flip the scubas on craigslist? I can't imagine shipping one.

Yep CL...Shipping would just be crazy...The good thing about the Alum 80cf tanks have been around for years and not much has changed..I get 60-70.00 for an out of hydro 80cf and 100.00 or so with a fresh hydro..

All expired tanks get 125 psi pumped into them and taken to the 100 yard target stand for proper disposal.
