barrel material ideas- limited luxury kits
i figure anyone can make a barrel with access to a machine shop and a bunch of cash from pre orders
7-8 inch control bore, testing will decide what length.
i already have allot of it worked out BUT i need to know exactly what material to use for the control bore, which will be a sleeve, most likely not interchangeable
high carbon steel
looking for something as light as possible so that leads me to titanium BUT i have heard that very high quality steel has a better finish (honing) to it, also some people have thrown brass into the mix as a good material to use
benefits of each? would 1/20 of an inch be thick enough? I will be using a custom made outer sleeve of a very hard material so strength i think i have under control
titanium, if for no reason other than awesome sparks! :clapping:
High carbon steel would rust, making it a poor choice regardless of how fine a finish it can produce.
I think there are plenty of shops making brass barrels already.... Palmer's Pursuit and Hammerhead come to mind... It's allegedly the best for barrel linings and inserts, being a low friction material and taking a fine hone. Stainless steel comes in 2nd, I believe.
But titanium... I'd like to hear a machinist chime in here and give us an opinion on titanium's mythical properties. Would be pricey, but it sounds like it has potential. A barrel of solid titanium might be as light as carbon fibre, but as durable as anything else (not that I think carbon fiber isn't durable enough).
Well dye had the titanium boomstick a while back, i think that went over well enough
