Ive used carburetor cleaner in aluminum barrels before to clean out an old 'cat that was neglected for 3 years after seemingly chopping an entire case. It worked excellent. No visible damage to anything [just keep it away from o-rings].

I had same problem with a aluminum barrel and resorted to using a 2ft long drill tip and cut a strip of a towel and put it on the tip of the bit so It caught and tightly wrapped down the bit and bored at high speed slowly working down the barrel. Nervous but it got it all out.

And the test was... Goo gone on a folding swab It worked great. For those curious, it is a deathstix carbon fiber barrel. No obvious signs of harm to it.

Glad to hear you got the barrel cleaned up. I always use hot water, dish soap and one of these:
